মানুষের কার্যকলাপের ফল দর্শন করে তার পরিচয় জানা যায়। বৈষ্ণব সমাজে বহু প্রকার বৈষ্ণব রয়েছেন। তাঁদের কাউকে বলা হয় গােস্বামী, কাউকে বলা হয় স্বামী, কাউকে বলা হয় প্রভু এবং কাউকে বলা হয় প্রভুপাদ। এই সমস্ত উপাধি দ্বারাই কেবল কারও পরিচয় জানা যায় না। গুরুকে তখনই কেবল প্রকৃত গুরু বলে চেনা যায়, যখন দেখা যায় যে তিনি তাঁর। শিষ্যদের চরিত্রের আমূল পরিবর্তন সাধন করেছেন।
